I had the same thing happen to a Vapalux lamp. I'm still using the exact same fuell in other Tilley and other Vapalux lamps with without issue......
To me it looks like that long pole is attached to the lamp like some kind of handle...

True David, but you would usually set it so that the wick and by that token the flame is up inside the globe rather than licking around the base...
I always leave the pump loose of Tilleys when not in use. If you don't then sooner or later you will end up with paraffin dripping everywhere......
