Hello Paul, the seller had it listed just as an oil lamp, which is why I got it at a very reasonable price.

Perhaps you could add a photo of your vase lamp to this post, Jeff.

Yes it is, but the vase lamps were not fitted with glass shades, if a shade was used then it was a parchment one.

That tank is brass and I reckon that the original burner would also have been brass with a lacquered finish and I have one of those.

The current burner is a plated brass one, Jeff.

I can't say I've ever seen one of these before, how rare are they? Or have I just not spotted them before and now I'll see them everywhere? I sort of want one.

I'd say as they are as rare as a Tilley vase lamp really, not in the league value wise though, i've seen quite a few but not in the wild...

Aladdin vase lamps do get listed on Ebay sometimes, but they sell for far more than I'm willing to pay.

The American vase lamps are often listed on Ebay USA., the link below is for the Aladdin Knights website. Jeff.

This photo shows the English made Aladdin green vase lamp.

The owner of this lamp has given me permission to post the photo here.

In an earlier post I mentioned a fawn coloured vase lamp, that is an American Aladdin vase lamp.

Aladdin UK., only marketed 2 colours of vase lamp, but there are variations in the depth of colour of the vases over the years, Jeff.

When I saw the picture I was about to congratulate you on the quick work

Pleased to say I hopefully have another Alladin on it's way to me too. I've been keeping an eye open for a Type 12 with the English font... Not exactly rare I know, but I wanted it to complement my bog standard Type 12.

I do really like the Aladdins, but I'm starting to struggle for places to put them without resorting to a dedicated shelf. Ideally I wanted to use them pretty much the same as they would have been in their day.

Aladdin lamps are okay and Bill Courter's book is well worth buying as is the Australian Aladdin book, Jeff.

Hello Paul, that's a fine addition to your collection and the other 2 sold very cheaply, Jeff.

"There are approximately 23 different colour and shape versions of the vase lamp available in the US plus a Crown Devon ceramic vase lamp in the UK that was available in two colours and two different burners." reference this site Aladdin model 12 vase lamps

I haven't seen this thread for ages, to think that February last year I was asking the questions further up the page now look.

Oh dear, there's no hope is there  . I do like the thought of having an oil lamp on the bog roll holder though, it would certainly be a talking point.

The toilet roll lamp is novel and I hope that someone finds an example, Jeff.

That looks really good Jeff, what have you done to make the Bakelite shine so much?

Well spotted Matt, one problem with the Bakelite tanks is the join between the top of the tank and the body of the tank, they often leak from there and my lamp did.

So i gave the entire tank a good wash and dry and then it got two coats of polyurethane varnish and that sealed the join.

The leak could also be sealed with some type of tank sealant, but i had a can of varnish in my shed, Jeff.

Ahh, thanks Jeff. I've never had fuel in mine so I don't know if it leaks or not. I think I just put some silicone dash shine on mine or something, could probably do with some more. :-k

Those old black telephones were made of bakelite, and one tip I heard was to polish them with Brasso, it works well too.
