    Yes @george . White gas/straight run gas would still be the ideal liquid for any such lanterns. Unfortunately they're in general, obsolete. I'd need one that could operate directly with any gasoline from the pump. A little compromize I guess.

    @MYN Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the gasoline sold in your area regular unleaded? That's all we use or can get over here for automotive use. It use to be called "white gas", now it's just called unleaded. Any mil-spec lantern will run on it. I have three, Coleman 252 1945, a 1952, and an Armstrong Products dated 1976. All run fine on "unleaded"

    Yeah, unleaded petrol is in fact almost completely different from the old white gas. Rather undesirable for anything that works by the preheating and vaporizing principle. The Milspecs would drink that as well, since it could also take in the leaded ones.
    @george ,
    A long while back, when unleaded gasoline was making its debut here, I used to think it was just straight-run gasoline without the tetraethyl lead. I was also assuming that they merely blended some aromatic hydrocarbons and alcohols to boost the octane. Well I was quite far off and only got to know quite recently that its much more than that. Certainly not the best liquid for lanterns. They decompose into nasty stuffs when heated in the vaporizer. They don"t just vaporize like the straight-runs into gaseous form.
