I have been playing with some rusty Primus stove legs and aluminium foil. It isn't rapid but I would say there is certainly an effect which is more than one might expect. From schoolboy chemistry wasn't there a displacement reaction? A more reactive metal would convert the oxide of a less reactive one. I reckon that is what goes on here.
@Polybus i have done and doing home nickel plating and it is quite easy. I actually did some yesterday. The results are very good, in fact exceptionally good and I’m very pleased with the results. I didn’t buy any commercial plating kits, i wanted to do on my own, I like a challenge, and the expense of these commercially produced kits seemed exorbitant. I did a lot of research and produced my own. I used a variable DC power supply and made nickel acetate from white vinegar bought from Woolworths @ $1.26 a litre and 2 nickel electrodes. I’ll do a post on home nickel plating very soon, just got to post my latest fettle first. Cheers Pete
