Just occured to me the problem might be the operator. You said a quarter turn to light but nowhere did you say you opened the valve all the way. Once running the valve has to be fully opened to shut off the air and open the fuel supply fully. Maybe I'm preaching to the converted here but I had to ask. ::Neil::

    Hello again everyone.

I'd given up on the 220K but having fettled everything else and coverted a couple of other Coleman lanterns I thought I'd give it one last try. The first thing I tried was to pump it up with nothing in it and sure enough I felt a good strong blast of air on my lips! So, if it can blow air through it MUST do the same for fuel, so I put it back together again, filled it with fuel, fitted two Butterfly mantles and burned them off first. Then, after 40 initial pumps I let the fuel through and she burst into life. I opened the valve fully and pumped like stink as David suggested and now it's working perfectly!

I can only conclude that it was either:

    1. Operator error.
    2. A minor blockage that cleared itself.
    3 Both of the above.

Anyway, I now have a Coleman 220K whispering quietly to itself providing a good, strong light. This is one Coleman I will NOT be converting!
