Agreed, it is good, does the job, but hits the pocket if you are a regular user.

 

Toilet bowl cleaner on all non painted parts will remove rust and other types of crud. And then a polish of your choice.

 

Man, a deer crapped on my lantern while I was camping and it started to rust. Waite, I have the answer.

came with it. I haven’t look if it’s period correct or Not.

I put a seal into the fuel cap today and it didn’t want to screw on to the fount at all. Any idea how to get it to go on.

 

Did you removed the old one?

 

Didn’t see an old one. The seal is flush with the brass insert thing and there are threads available on the cap, and the cap screws on without the new seal.

 

Are the collars on these wartime 228s made of steel too? If they're steel, I'd guess they wouldn't be plated with nickel as what had been omitted on the founts.
But there should be some sort of coating on them to reduce chances of rusting. Perhaps some sort of passivation such as chromated zinc plating.
Chemicals alone would not remove those blemishes that had been leftover by heavy rust because those are already pitted. Only mechanical abrasion would smoothen them out.

When you mentioned "flush with the brass insert", did you mean flush with the groove around the insert or flush with the entire thickness of the insert?
If its the latter, then the seal is too thick.

 

It’s flush with the raised bit in the middle and around the side.

 

Those seals can get very compacted over time.

Heat the insert with a blow torch, if the old seal is there, it will expand and burn out. When the insert has cooled, clean it with wire wool and put the new seal in.

 

Either the old seal is still in the insert or the new seal is too thick.

 

Thanks for the help. I had no idea that the seal went inside. I thought the old seal was just the the part that I put the new seal on top of
