I have never seen that happen to a Tilley burner before and that is an older style of burner and they are usually better.
@AussiePete It's interesting that these events tend to happen as tank pressure falls. I'm not sure whether that means the burning mixture becomes lean of fuel. That was always bad in engines leading to burnt valves holed piston crowns etc. I just wonder. That burner was not very old and working very well at normal pressure.
It would seem a spec of carbon momentarily slowing fuel and thus airflow causes flame to flash back giving under-burn.
Was this burner one of the new reproduction ones I see on eBay, etc? The dome doesn't look as round as the old ones.
@george I have some of the reproduction Tilley burners running in a few of my Frankies. The type I have has a flat-ish top, no dome at all. In one of my lamps, shown below, the repo burner has done over 20 hours work and runs without any problems. Just sayin .... Cheers Pete
JonD, I should have asked you about the "melted" burner. Was that burner one of the new reproductions or an old one? Reason I ask is the dome looks flat for an old one and more like a new one. I just bought a new reproduction so I was wondering out loud....
It was one of the repro ones -well spotted +eagle eyes! That is nothing to do with what happened here all the same. I was a simple case of low pressure eventually starved the flame. Downward velocity of mixture became too slow to prevent it popping up top to burn there instead. You can create this condition by relieving tank pressure slowly with any of the burners. I am coming to think that this is a problem with the tilley design and maybe kero types in general.A petromax can do it too, it burns up in the J tube. With low pressure on a white gas coleman I can't think of any similar effect. It burns at the nozzle until the last bit of vapour - if it's a two burner and it's dark enough - it gives you the owl eyes. Then it goes out.
You were right...I now have two more. A 50s x246 with the loop bail arrangement and an Optimus 1550G which I reported on earlier today. Had a prob with the preheater which I resolved this afternoon. Think I might hold off for a while now....
@Seamanjive O’ how many times have I said “I’ll hold off for a while now” ....... Then bugger it, a lamp pops up. Then off I go again ....... Cheers Pete
@Seamanjive I think Steve has been fettling - at least fettling his own idiosyncratic batting style. Two of my brothers were at Old Trafford to watch that double century. The half from Starc was pretty good, too... Cheers Tony
Brave men..looked cold. Not bad down here in London 22c. Mad to schedule test cricket in September in this country. They'll be playing the final test in over coats and scarves!
