I dismantled the shaft and put a layer of very thin PTFE tape around it until the brass tubes were a push fit ad a lot at the space between them, put it back together and it now seems to be leak-free! I don't know how long it will last, but I think I shall have light tomorrow, I'll try to get some photos to say thank you to everybody who has helped me!

PTFE as a gland packing works very well and should last at least as well as graphite. In some ways it is actually better as with a low friction coefficient it does not tighten up the shaft as much as other materials can. In general it is better to use the gas PTFE tape which is heavier than the thin stuff used for water plumbing joints. It will stand quite a high heat as well so can be used on glands close to genrators/mantles and still perform OK. ::Neil::

It just lasted until I got the pressure up to about 2 bar, then it poured out again! I'll try to add more to see if that helps!

I turned up a new Knob-side sleeve with about 1 thou clearance between it and the shaft and put a rubber O ring between the two brass sleeves. So far, it's ok, no leak, I think there was far too much play between the sleeve and the shaft. Maybe I've fixed it!
