I would have to agree with @ColinG - I think we are looking at a rogue material here ! - but interestingly both body and tubes are affected. It is less likely for both materials to be incorrect ?
This is actually something that I do. It’s my usual way of getting the parts I need. Here in Finland the X246 lanterns were immensely popular at one time—pretty much something found in every household. I bought the Juliands burner for a very special restoration project just to try it out. Based on what I’d heard, it might have been even better than an original Tilley burner. It ended up being an expenditure of oppiraha, as we call it in Finnish (let’s see how the online translators deal with that one ).
I bought one of those Juliands burners a couple of years ago. Been a while since it was run but it never worked. Red flames if I remember correctly. Other burners on the same lamp worked perfectly. Sent an email to Juliands querying the condition but never got a replay. The burner with a mantle attached sits on a shelf for posterity. As far as I am concerned there is some materials/design fault.
