A pair of Bialaddins. 300X and 315. I did to compare a non thorium with a thorium mantle (well that was the excuse)

 

Lanterns are lit, fire next then some well deserved fettler refuelling.

 

Looks like a pretty good evening ! complete with surround sound

 

That was a lovely evening playing with lamps, the weather was good and the fire is still going despite that it's now raining.
Lamps performed well, the bialladin and veritas were on their first run following a successful post fettle testfire. The 320 ran very well and seemed to get brighter as it settled down, the veritas ran lovely but did need the pricker 3 times. The big surprise was the optimus running hot, I may have over pumped it, I let some pressure out and it kept running but didn't expect that.
Light ups are good fun.

What was the verdict with the thorium mantels? They both looked good.

 

@James K - not so evident in the photo but a remarkable difference in "whiteness" or I suppose "temperature" using the correct nomenclature. I like the efficiency of the brighter light but the wife prefers the softer more orange light. The lamps are comparable - same quantity of paraffin, same number of pumps. The 300x is more worn but that had the thorium mantle. Not entirely scientific but an indicator.
If I had to guess I would say the thorium was about 4100 Kelvin and the ordinary 3100 Kelvin. It would be interesting to hear from anyone with a suitable meter who might have looked into this.

That is handy to know, I like a nice healthy white light.
The next generation bonfire crew are prime candidates for a thori um test, I am putting together a 300x and the inevitable post bialladin project 'Frankie built from all the leftover bits.

 

@James K ,interesting. I too treat my older lanterns to a thorium mantle when I have them (Silk-lite for Coleman and ex-UK MOD Vapalux mantles). I prefer the light, and the "weave" on the Silk-Lite is slightly coarser, which I think suits the lantern.

 

I am using the 10 for £10 on ebay ones from JuliLands.
@James K - some interesting and promising candidates on the bench - I look forward to seeing them in action.

The top cap on the 300x was replaced during the rebuild with one from Julian Shaws website, the hood has just blackened through use.
