I contacted the seller he offers to drill a smaller nozzle, which should go well with my "old burner" (!! ??) I am confused so I tried a new burner taken on a "modern X246" from 1975 it works almost perfectly: no halo and acceptable light, even if the lamp smells a little kerosene I don't see a noticeable difference in the design of these two burners, I don't understand ? Does anyone have an explanation to this ?
If it still smells a bit it must be running a bit rich. The "older" Tilley burners were longer, heavier, and had a longer mixing dome and injector than the 1970s Tilley burners. But I can't see the logic in what the seller is saying. The jet in the Tilley vaporiser did not changed in size. Old ones, top row: Cheers Tony
Yes Tony, I still not understand I checked the nozzle size with an acupuncture needle a 0.20 mm goes into the nozzle, 0.22 is too much so we are at 300 CP of power But the fact is, this X246 burner works better
Surely 0.20mm is too large an orifice? Possibly 0.21 considering the tool you used to check it. I've been wrong thousands of times. I would have thought 0.16 or 0.17 would be about right. I'd be interested to know what size Tilleys jet orifice was.
A 300cp lamp should have a jet of no more than 0.2mm. That would mean a 0.2mm needle would be a push fit. When making my own cleaning needles for a 300cp lamp I use a 0.18mm needle.
@ROBBO55 Do you have something to measure the jet in the top of a NOS or little used Tilley vapouriser? Tony Edit: The reason I ask is that I have some idea from somewhere that the Tilley jet is nearer to 0.17 than 0.20, but I’m happy to be proven wrong.
@Tony Press Tony, I don't have the gauges. It was @Jones the lamp that posted about measuring jet apertures with a set of watchmakers broaches. Hopefully he will be able to assist. Measuring Jet/Nipple Orifice size.
Hi, I am new to the forum. I have an Optimus 930 that I have owned for a very long time, probably 50 years. I need a new vaporiser as the thread that the nipple screws into is stripped. Someone who seems to know about these things suggested that a collar with the female thread my be available to braze on. I just don't know where to start but a Korean import sound like a good place to start.

I’m afraid I’m unable to assist with your particular problem as I know nothing about Optimus lanterns having never been lucky enough to own one however, as a pointer it would be better to start your own new thread with “Optimus 930” somewhere in the title. I wonder where my spare Optimus 930s are - somewhere round here, to be sure... I've never managed to get the little buggers to burn nicely without black mantle disease to some extent or other. I suppose I should get off my lazy backside and find one then try sticking a coil of copper wire around the pricker rod...
I measured the tip of a number of prickers from NOS Tilley No. 606 vapouriser and have concluded that the tip is 0.18 to 0.19mm. That makes the jet very close to 0.20mm. I wonder where I got the idea it was less than that? This makes the 300cp "rating" of these Tilleys in line with what's been written above. [In this thread I measured the tip of Tilley pricker for No. 1560 vapouriser used on the CS56 stove. I concluded the tip was 0.28mm to 0.29mm and that the jet in the vapouriser was 0.30mm or a smidgin larger (but not much)]. Cheers Tony @ROBBO55
