What causes the dark marks on the mantle?
I lit one of my Tilley lamps tonight and initially seemed fine then I noticed the light went dull.
On observation I noticed a couple dark marks on the mantle that looked like burn marks.
Did I some how light it incorrectly?
By the way is there trick to tying the mantle on? My fumble fingers struggle to do it.

It does seem that have need to use the needle to clean the jet. Or pump up the pressure.
Dark spots is soot and where there is soot no light light will come.
You can burn it of with an external gas flame or make sure the flame is hot and correct size (needling, pressure).

But on the right I see a hole in the mantle.
For a Tilley the shape of the mantle bottom is off. Should be U-shape.
    Is it a Tilley mantle?

    Hi Wimve
Thanks for the reply and explanation. This is not a proper mantle I am waiting for them to arrive. They are a cheap 300-500cp double tie mantle I got from a camping store. I will give it a good clean and replace the mantle and try again. Hopefully will not take long for my other mantles to arrive.
I look forward to seeing what a good mantle looks like. I thought it might be something to do with my all-thumbs tying technique.
