Maybe someone had it plated? If it is an (old) original one it's a real shame to do this. Modern versions are still used today. The rubber diving suit today has a large watertight zipper diagonally over the back which makes it a lot easier to get in! The old ones had one opening, one had to get in & out through the neck (with a little help from 4 strong people...)
https://www.amazon.com/antique-diving-helmet/s?k=antique+diving+helmet many more for sale here. And on ebay.
Describing those helmets as "Scuba" is even dafter than describing them as "Victorian". Scuba, as in 'self-contained underwater breathing apparatus' was invented by Jacques Cousteau in the early 1950s. Any helmet / diving suit which relies on air fed from the surface cannot possibly be 'scuba'...
Not in this household, George. I'd be embarrassed to even own it, far less put it on display and expect it to elicit conversation...
Wow there really is some terrible monstrosity's out there, next time I see one I might even take the time to photograph it.
There's a Veritas 350 'horror edition' on eBay at the moment. I'll post it when the auction is over although it's a buy now so I can post it right? Here goes... And for only £50plus postage! Includes: painted hood, no annoying control knob, groovy wierd globe and incomplete burner - what's not to love!?
Hum ... I think I prefer the PL gassie-crossover with the S+T flavour?? How many bits is the poor veritas missing to make it shine? (I don’t mean electrically)
@ColinG Now that’s a challenge or is it a trial ...... All that for £50 , what a bargain and no annoying knobs ....
Don’t forget that the air tube to the mixing chamber is not there, clearly it’s been fitted with aftermarket extractors ...... it gets better and better ..... where will it stop?
Here we go - a "rare bespoke" FL6 "used, like new", "with original patina" advertised locally to me:- Marketplace – Vintage WW2 Tilley Hendon FL6 kerosene floodlight. This antique floodlight has its original etched g | Facebook I've sent the seller a message asking if they still have the bits they took off before they electrified it (I didn't want to say 'electrocuted' in case they got upset and I do want those bits if they still have them)...
Here's something else:- Marketplace – Ww2 Samuel Heath military blow torch /lamp.. | Facebook A big Samuel Heath & Sons blowlamp for a mere £80!! Dream on... ...and look - they've even got a bloody diver's helmet, too!
No excuse now, then? .. Oh, and you shouldn’t say ‘electrified’ .. you have to use words like ‘up cycled’ or ‘refurbished’
That's probably why I got a single-word answer to my query whether they still had the parts they'd removed - "Nope". I replied to the effect that it was a pity because they'd have been worth something. Hopefully that'll wind 'em up a little bit - the b'stards...
Yeah and I accidentally asked them if it was still available and we know that I live in Australia haha.
Sorry Matt, I thought you mite have bought it for spares? :-) Christ poor old Louis Tiff must be spinning in his grave all the TUT that is attributed (including the above)
Holy hell that's a horror story in one dreadful act! Is that actually a pressure lantern tank under all the tat?
