what colour is paraffin? i drained the one of the radiator tanks and what came out was a washing up liquid type of green, sort of lime wine gum green. can 32 second heating oil be used
Colour? Alladin Pink, Esso Blue, and stuff I bought back from France was pi** yellow. Crud may cause discoloration. Heating oils come in different grades; 28 second, 32 second, and 35 second. Depending on who you are asking might throw up differing opinions as to the differences and qualities between these oils, 'kerosene', jet fuel, and their application in lamps and stoves!
Here paraffin generally is clear when bought new, but it's not uncommon for old paraffin that has been standing for a long time in some apparatus tank to turn into this green shade you describe. I assume it's coloured from the copper in the brass. If the tank is in brass, that is...
Derek is correct, but pure paraffin is clear like water, it's only coloured because a dye has been added and some paraffin was coloured green, but that was for useing in old tractors. TVO.,= Tractor Vapourising Oil. In my opinion, it's more likely that the fuel which you mentioned was blue, but it has been tinted with corrision from the tank. If you choose to follow the advice in my previous post on this topic, then all of the old paraffin will be of use. I use heating oil in pressure lamps etc., and it works well and the paraffin which is now sold in 4 litre cans is just the same as heating oil. I have discussed that topic with many folk and they all concur, Jeff.
So is Pre Pac, sold in 4 litre cans... PS. I wouldn't mind betting that Regent Super Green Paraffin was green. http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/2744
I had some green stuff come out of a stove and it works perfectly. My main fuel is 28 sec heating oil which I can buy from the pump at about 78 pence per litre. I go with a 5 gallon drum and stock up, I've already got through one of those since Ashover. The same place I buy 28 sec from also sells 35 which is heating oil/red diesel as you can go in your tractor and fill it up at the pump. As i'm sure you are aware red diesel is ordinary diesel (with the dye in it to identify it as tax free) and therefore is of little or no use in pressure lamps, if I have understood previous post that I have read.
The paraffin that I buy from my local small garage is green! And this is a new delivery only a month ago. Paraffin I have seen pink, blue, green, yellow and clear. Different distributors add their own dye to brand it, therefore Esso Blue, Aladdin Pink etc. Whatever! it all seems to burn much the same. Steve.
Oh yes I forgot to mention that 28 sec kero does stink to high heaven if you get it on your clothes. I speak from experience.
Talking of TVO, it ought to be said that it is not strictly paraffin alone, but based on a paraffin/heating oil - petrol mix. Various recipes exist (one for making TVO scones - but that's a bit tongue in cheek!). Friends of Ferguson, and Grey Fergie data. Speaking of smells, the last lot of 'paraffin' came from a new source, who also sold 28 second heating oil and 'kerosene'. Now, when our electronically controlled paraffin heater shuts off, it stinks to high heaven - a sort of bitter 'burnt oil' smell. Never did that before, just had the aromatic paraffin smell. I wonder if our new supplier has mixed his goods! Can't see that it should make much difference. I shall make enquiries . . . Something Jeff mentioned: Brush cleaning. For a brief period I worked alongside some professional painters and decorators, and found that instead of buying that expensive brush cleaner to clean their oil based paint soaked brushes, they used paraffin. To get down to the base of the brush they also used new wire brushes. Another little eye opener for young Mr. Wet behind the ears!
smells, burnt kero reminds me of airports, its that burnt aviation smell, some pics of globes that i have found, 3 of one and 1 on its own, dont know which lamps they fit.
They are just hurricane lamp glasses personally i'd put them in the glass recycling skip, i only keep ones with names on...
The 3 matching globes are for Chalwyn Tempest cold blast lanterns, the link below shows my example of that lantern, but you will have to scroll down the page to see it. http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/2172 The other globe will fit many brands of hot blast hurricane lanterns. In my opinion, they are all worth keeping, Jeff.
I did! I guess as a sixteen yr old my first experience was driving MF 35's on a farm which would not have Fordsons as it was claimed they got stuck on wet grass! Did love the Ferguson's though. Never got to drive any other make unfortunately. PS: Not for a moment implying David Brown was anything to do with Fordson!!) There was a good program on the box some years ago called 'Perpetual Motion' in which one whole episode was about the little Grey Fergy.
I wish you wouldn't swear on the site Jeff..... I'm a Fergie man through and through (except when it comes to heavy work where I confess to being a Zetor Crystal fanatic..... ) Alec.
Hello Derek, the small grey Fergie tractor was widely used here too, but my first memories of a tractor are of a small red Davie Brown which ran on paraffin and before that the heavy haulage work was done by a large white cart horse. Very good Rangie! Jeff.
Ooops! Digressing again - apologies to Beanz! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP1nUVzlJiM I spotted an image a Stationary Engine magazine yesterday which had fixed to a wall in the background a sign. It said: - ESSO GREEN, and beneath it 'Tractor vapourising oil'. Apparently TVO as a commercially available fuel ceased in 1974. After that, you had to brew your own.
According to my supplier, the only difference between 28 sec heating oil and the paraffin/kerosene you can buy in garden centres in overpriced 4 litre containers is the aroma. The heating oil is designed for using in sealed heating systems where aroma is irrelevant. Therefore, the oil does not go through the 'make it smell nice' process. I've used 28 sec in all my outdoor kero stoves and lamps for ages with no problems. I also use it indoors in my Bialaddin Bowlfires but to avoid smells you need to make sure the burner is sound with no vapour leaks. Terry
Well, this is certainly a diverse thread!! Any other bizarre topics to discuss? I have a certain proclivity towards Synchronome electric clocks.... Alec.
I just drained this tonight from an FL6 I bought late last year:- You tell me what colour you think it is!
David, judging by the colour it is important you drink more! It can be bad for the kidneys otherwise... Take care mate! Wim
10 inch suspended donut. i dont have a globe, cage or reflector. unless they are in a box as yet unfound.
The globe and wire holder are easy to locate, the reflector may be an odd size, not sure on that model...
Could be just the photograph, but it looks like one of the suspension posts for the reflector is missing...
Following on from your brass cleaning thread, this here donut needs a complete refurb. A bare metal respray is in order. Send it to me if you don't fancy the daunting task ahead and I'll happily keep it as payment.
