It's not the fuel or anything else but the atomizer that's to blame. The atomizer expands as it heats up, causing the nozzle to loosen and throw flames into the combustion chamber. As a result, the lamp's light dims. I've had this happen to 2 new HK 500 lamps. To solve the problem, we either change the atomizer or replace the nozzle with a tighter one. I personally put a new nozzle from the Chinese anchor lamp and the problem was solved. Unfortunately, the new petromax lamps are much less built than the old ones. As for the fuel, kerosene creates more carbon in the internal parts, resulting in a shorter service life. With good quality lamp oil, the lamp works perfectly and doesn't smell. I haven't tried this. Thank you for the information. How do you tighten the nozzle when it's hot??? Do you do this while the lamp is working??? I think the temperature is too high to make adjustments.
Well you can do this direct after shutting down the lantern or after pre heating or pre heat (torch) the jet part seperately. Without the hood you can even try it when alight !
