The cutting out is well done and
even less chipped than an original one.
    Congrats.

Thanks to all! I already talked my son into doing another one! Hope this next one turns out as good as this one did!

@Michel My son told me to get a Dramel bit for tile and glass. They are about the size of a drill bit but with a tip that will drill thru glass or tile. He tried the 22 mm drill bit but it was hard to control and wondered all over the glass. The drill bit one is the best. Once you make the hole in the glass, you continue to simply widen the hole. It takes a good steady hand (which I don't have) but just keep slowly widening the hole until you reach the diameter you want. The key here is to take you time and don't rush it!

What do you mean with that, George?
You describe 'widening the hole' so perhaps this is a cutting or grinding bit that also acts sideways? Perhaps you can give a Dremel parts number.
Also, did your son use any liquid like kerosene in the process?

I think supporting the glass on the inside near the cutting area by two small diameter tubes covered in foam insulating material for instance is in order?
    Questions, questions.....

@M.Meijer Mike, let me check with my son and ask him just how he went about doing cutting and I'll get back with you. Sorry for being so vague.

George, no need to be apologetic.; perhaps it is me who is coming on too strong.
I am interested in the process, like several others here on the forum, and at the chance to overlook somebody else's endeavours, you seem to have this hole-cutting in globes as the most current.

Please take your time to source some further information.
    Thank you!

@M.Meijer Mike, it was a Dramel bit that looked like a regular drill bit but just the very end of the bit has a cutting end that looks like a diamond cutting end. There was some kind of oil included in the package with the Dramel bit.
He drilled a hole in the glass with the bit and just kept working the drill around the drilled hole increasing its diameter until it was about 22mm in diameter. He used the oil provided to keep the hole well lubricated so as not to heat it and cause it to break. I'm going to try and see if I can find a picture of the product or at least a better description.
    Please bear with me.

@Michel And all who are interested in what was used for drilling the hole in the glass globe my son drilled for me:
"Dremel 662D 1/8 - inch glass drilling bit". If you go to eBay and search this name you should get a hit. I am sorry but I could not find the seller who advertised the drill with the Dremel cutting oil including. I am sure kerosene would work fine for lubricating during this operation.
I hope I am clear on how the cutting procedure was carried out.
I do hope this helps! If it doesn't, you know who to throw the brick at!!
