I was quite lucky with it, it had been "converted" to electricity. The seller listed it several times and it didn't sell then they dropped the price and I missed it! So I contacted them and made an offer.. Thankfully the electric "conversion" consisted of sticking one of those fittings for making lamps from bottles into the updraft tube so no damage was done.
Rather annoyed this weekend I missed a Type 12 burner that only sold for £4.99 I had it on a watch, even had the computer on and completely forgot at the last minute... Still like buses there will be another one along soon..
Sorry Gneiss,,,if i'd have known i'd have put it in the trade section on here,,i've just posted off it to the buyer,
I'm afraid I'm making a habit of it these days! That's the third thing I've missed in as many days... On the plus side I do have a Baladdin lamp on it's way
I like your lamps! I started out as a kid with wickies (feuer-hand and table lamps with kosmos burners) before leaving it all for several years. I was into stoves for a while and now I'm sliding into lamps again aswell! Everything that burns, eh? I thought this thread may be fitting to show off a yard-sale find of mine. I'm not sure if its a lamp or possibly a heater. Anyone have a clue? If it's a lamp it could be from a ships lantern, given the location of the yard-sale. Ii it's possible to make it work I'd be tempted to franken-fix it into a garden or patio light. Would it be possible to fit Aladdin parts on there? The regulating knob has the "Double dragons" mark of Erich & Graetz.
Hi, I can't help with that one but could you give some dimensions, font diameter, height etc as it may assist others.. The round lamps that I'm familiar with are the burners for railway lamps and the like but they all had flat wicks and burners much like road lamps.
Being in the states I keep a small collection of railroad signal lanterns. Dead flame types, the common "Adlake", a few Dietz bell bottoms, a Dressel and a Handlan. I like the pretty colored glass. Of course when burning they all look the same color to me. Dan MacPherson
I'm going to toss in my $.02 on the Aladdin model 23. I'll be the first to admit that the model 23 doesn't have the same "feel" as the older Aladdin's. It's strength is being an everyday working lamp. Parts, although not common, are availble at decent prices. It's best feature is the heat it puts out! I use mine daily in the winter to add both light and heat to the room.
I always feel lamps are to be used... Most my wick lamps, including two of my Aladdins are lit every weekend as it's just creates a pleasant atmosphere for unwinding. Last night we had the house lit entirely by candles and wick lamps, just because we can My wife has no interest in lamps at all but she does enjoy having them lit at the weekends as we do.
After seeing an aladdin lamp lit at stu's I decided to shell out for a mantle for my type 23,,,£13 from moncriefs post free ( they also have 169 vaporisers for £17 post free ) fitted it tonight and self and wifey well impressed...
PS.norf having seen your lamp lit I'm going to get one of those yellow/gold shades myself... All mine are white.
Yes, that dark champagne coloured is the best in my opinion. When I grab an Aladdin for quiet light, I practically always take the one with that particular shade.
It's a fine lamp but I prefer shade rings to shade carriers. I have some shade rings for sale or trade, check out the link below, Jeff. http://classicpressurelamps.com/index.php?threads/
Save yourself all the bother and use this! It's free, secure and works a treat. I've been using it for years with only two small problems when it didn't enter my bids. Doesn't guarantee you'll win every time of course, (none of them do - it still depends on what you're prepared to pay and you can still be out-bid) but it saves having to remember and actually being there at your 'puter to enter your bid. Sometimes I have to work, eat and sleep...
Given recent experience it's likely to be more reliable than me! I'll try it on a few common items and let you know how I get on...
Im no collector but I have three Grubenlamps which I do believe come from Germany. I am not quite sure when it is produced or what mining purposes it had. Can find all about this lamp but then I must download google chrome to translate German.
My first lamp was a safety lamp and it's still my favorite... Here's a couple of pictures of my Aladdin English fonted Model 12 You may notice from some of the pictures that I use small pieces of heatshrink on the shade carriers to protect the glass from the wire.
Here is my favourite wick lamp: a small Kosmos Brenner that is use to give light when I'm lighting my Tilleys in the dark. It is as found. It is 11" high with a 7" chimney with a steel fount.
Here is my latest venture to the dark side (No pun intended about light output). £15 from the local carboot, perfect chimney, good base and quite a nice original (I believe) pleated shade. It's very delicate but it has survived very well.
Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrgh! Take it off!!!! That's awful! I had a bedside lamp made of pleated plastic in 1960 (electric). That is Soooo out of place! I'm off to lie down now.
Are you sure? I think you like them deep down Derek, you mentioned them twice in 2 minutes in as many threads. A classic case of a closet pleat lover. Give in to it's pleaty goodness. Mmmmmmm, Do you want some more pics from different angles? Ok i'm done now, sorry.
I dont wanna judge the taste - but I like it, because it represents a certain time in history in a fine way. If I had the place for it - I would like to have it stored but unfortunately there is a Coleman 275 standing there right now Claus C
My Mother had a crimplene dress that hung from her waist in a multitude of pleats just like that. Perhaps I'm missing her - or perhaps it was an awful dress! As a shade it works, but there's a conflict in styles. I just find it a bit creepy! Edited to add: I've got it: Lamp shades from living in Bed-sits when first married - gruesome existences!
