Hummm, the one that comes to mind had a "main air tank" you pumped up like any pressure lantern. The hollow wire ran from the air tank to each individual overhead light then you could light each individual overhead light like a Quick-Light lantern. The large air tank held both the air pressure and the fuel, gasoline. It was usually in another room away from the area being lit. Does that make sense?

George, Sure, most of the GPA companies sold hollow wire lighting systems as you described. Collecting hollow wire is one of my niches. I like you was once terrified of the thought of lighting gasoline lamps. Once I realised it was the vapour that burnt at the mantle and not petrol that eased my mind. As long as the fittings are secure and don't leak, there is almost zero chance of anything going wrong. The same can be said of self contained lamps like Coleman lanterns.
@Tony Press : yes,Tony, I think you're right. Thanks! @Matty : Matty, I feel safe with a Coleman lantern. I guess collecting them for almost 50 years you build up confidence.
@Matty , Austral Automatic. I have one (or maybe two) of those. Nope, close but no cigar. Automatic Gas Lamp Co it is.
@george I am very happy you took the post as it was intended. I was going through some stuff when I came across this ad, one I had forgotten about. I was looking at the ad thinking how marvellous it was when this topic came to mind. The rest you know. There is a Coleman ad that features a mother and child in it that I have always considered to be a wonderful ad. The ad is from 1929, the year of my fathers birth.
@Matty Thanks for this, Matty. I love old pictures like this. There's just something so warm about them. Maybe it's just we were dealing with a more innocent time, everything wasn't such a rush, people showed respect for one another. Technology was much more simple and people like me had a chance to understand it. Oh, well, we get old and wait for the next generation and hope for the best. Have a great weekend!
