    Hi Henry,

ah, that’s what the hook is for then! I gathered that but the wire is still too long and the shade has lots of slack if I use it?

The wire originally was shaped to a loop on each end and allowed some give. Tilley EX100
Early globes were also slightly onion/pear shaped and slightly longer. EX 100

@Alex74 double check the relevant images in the links posted by @Graham P. You'll see the loops at each end of the wire are quite rotund, this has the effect of shortening the wire. The weight of the glass will not distort the loops.

    Henry.

Ok thanks guys. I received the Presta to Schroeder valve adapter from Amazon on Wednesday, so later today I’m going to pressurise it and see if I can get it to light up ok tonight in the garden.

Make sure the hanging bracket is up to the job, gravity can really upset these lamps

Ok, so Schroader valve on, filled it with fuel, mantle on, and used a car tyre foot pump to pressurise. Works incredibly well with no obvious leaks... then proceeded as usual and voila! She just sprung into life with no effort at all. No leaks from the stopcock or anywhere else that I can see ( so far). Tune to get the beer out...

There are so many ales to choose from in this country. That’s why I moved to the UK from Italy!:-k:idea: I think we should have a ‘great light up’ tomorrow eve, in support of all the volunteers and other critical workers around the world who are making the news these days. I’m looking forward to see your photos in a new thread! Get those lamps out and light ‘em up!!

With the "Totem" it becomes a full on street lamp - nice to see so light from such a good lantern.

@AussiePete Ah, Yes Pete! I remember meetings... I worked for the Department of Defense for little over 42 years and I think meetings were the one damn thing we went through just about every day - and only on rare occasions did we accomplish anything! Nice way to kill time, though...;)

At work, we often have meetings to discuss results of previous meetings which had been organised in prep to even bigger meetings!! And even now, during the lockdown we still do it using Skype..... at least you can mute the mic and nobody hears you snoring!

I couldn’t do the virtual Newark as I was stuck indoors with hay fever. So I do it tonight instead....I have installed an original Tilley 500 cp mantle on the OL50 and hung it up outside the summerhouse. It’s brighter than the electric bulbs!! Also put the same mantle on the self-lighting PL53. Huge amounts of warm light pouring out of both lanterns. So, what’s the main difference between 300 and 500 cp mantles? Is it just a larger surface area, or is there anything else in the ash composition? Does anybody know? If they are Tilley mantles or mantles made for those models, it will be size.

Variations of mantle composition will be an independent process.

    Cheers

Thanks guys. The OL50 was a totally unplanned find, so finding it probably happened for a reason. It desperately wanted to come home with me from Liverpool, and I adopted it. :whistle:But it definitely wants a 500 cp mantle.
