There are some of these lamps that really need to go in the reference gallery. It would be great to be able to see them documented with lots of pictures. :)

This is probably maybe the rarest lantern I have.
A Ditmar 541, what also makes cool is it has the original globe CE29A7E1-A3B7-437E-B109-F58BAC26129D.jpeg 74D38865-9214-4FBE-B55F-E66AC3E9289D.jpeg 365E750E-A0F1-4C9A-A7D8-92C97684548F.jpeg FE01AE79-5B18-40A7-87E3-0A9C464845EE.jpeg

I had an example of a “one only known” lamp until a fortnight ago. Now I have two of them!

I also received its sibling, which is now a “one only known”.

There are many reasons for “rarity” and I think the use of the term “rare” should be strictly descriptive. Some “rare” lamps may be valuable; some may not (or should not).

For me, the important characteristic is where the lamp fits into the history of pressure lamp production, that is, its significance.

    Cheers

    Tony

One of my equal rarest lamps is still this 1921 Venus.

Hi, I think this lamp can fall into any "rarest" category.
Three months ago I didn´t know this lamp existed. After
the post from Larry in Februari with the 1908 C-B Lighting Co. ad,
I was aware of this lamp. A couple of months later I had bought
an incomplete example of this lamp and now the restoration of that lamp is finished.
A ca. 1908 C-B Lighting Co. table lamp (probably made in the Tures Mfg. factory)
and I will post this lamp later in the gallery!

@John that ”little beauty” is made in Italy. In reality is a 300cp lamp that is made chubbier than usual by that extra aluminum big collar.

@Conny C the really incredible thing is how and where you acquire all these lamps! I mean, you didn’t know that it existed and just two months later you found one! Congratulations!

My rarest beastie in captivity is the Veritas Superb rebadged as the Coleman 239E Ranger. I’ve only seen one other.

Here's an unrestored lantern out of my attic that few have ever seen. Untouched in near 100 years.

When it came to me, it had a half tank of the most sweet and pleasant smelling gasoline that I have ever smelled in an old lamp.

Very remarkable. U. S. made Foote with valve in tank.

IMO, the most difficult part of this is agreeing on a definition of rare. Not so straightforward as it would seem. I agree a “handful” or less qualifies as rare in my minds definition. 1, 2, 12? Where does one draw the line? Furthermore, how about uncommon? What do we use to define that term? It would be nice to have a basis of comparison for definition of such vague terms. Antique and vintage are obviously bandied in ads and these terms are about a common a flies in a barnyard. While they make for good general search terms when hunting online, in reality they are so open ended as to be nearly useless in real life.
