There’s a lot to like these small Coleman lanterns?

I had read that 1 part acetone , 3 parts brake fluid, seems to do the trick, if you are going to leave it a few days, it make good penatrating oil, all so a fella used very heated cooking oil and poured it into the font just enough to cover the NRV.

I use a mix of 50:50 acetone and automatic transmission fluid for items that require a lot of penetrating oil. I find that Penetrene actually works better as it doesn’t separate.

I’m going to fill this tank with Penetrene when it dries out, as well as fill the pump tube. I’ll leave it for a week and come back to it.

    Cheers

I pondered this dilemma, and thought: if this lantern is from 1933, it will most likely have a cork pip. So I gently poked the pip and pushed it down a couple of millimetres with a broken Tilley pricker, and filled the bottom of the pump tube with 3-in-1 oil. After letting it sit for a few minutes, I tested the pump.

The NRV is working as it should. I’ll now get this lantern going.

Try heating up the NRV tool but beware of too much heat which can melt the solder in the bottom of the pump tube.
If it’s working it’s best to leave as is.

I’ll leave it as is to light it.

Then after the money shot, I’ll fill the tank and pump tube with penetrating oil and leave for a long while, and go and talk to the mechanic next door.

I’ve been wondering this too. Really works on vintage cars as you are much less likely to break the bolts compared to other methods, but I haven’t had a suitable opportunity to try it on a lantern nrv as yet.

I am pleased. I’m glad I got it running, even though it will now be a shelf queen.

    Cheers
