Who should be the 'Hoover'ofPressure Lamps

    It's all from the French verb 'porter' - to carry - and probably other earlier languages, too.

    Hence porter, portable, portmanteau, portage, Portakabin, porterage, portfolio etc.

    I just saw an ad in Trove from 1919 where a bloke was selling amongst other things ".... Kit Bags, Ports, Suitcases...."

    Yes. It most certainly originates from latin then.
