Picked up this speculum plated Guardsman at a local auction. Fount is in good condition and should come up nicely. The fount is undated and I’m intrigued by the age of this. The valve is a 246b style but there is an original older style valve in the box. Bail lug needs a repair but interestingly it is also a 246b style lug rather than the loop in the frame. The Bakelite pump knob is also interesting. Would like to know how these came out of the factory to know if I’ve got a mismatched lamp. The box and spares, including a couple of dipsticks are a nice bonus!
The Bakelite pump knob is correct you see that on these lamps, also used on the wing nut pump. Control cock I have also seen both versions, your lamp looks good and correct to me. Nice find…
The X246b has a handle with an offset in it and is removable, Yours looks like the X246 frame that came after the loop? Middle of the Fifties, give or take a year? The first ones weren’t removable from the cage. Maybe someone found the larger knob easier to use or perhaps the older one was worn? edit : or as Gary said perhaps it was original.. some useful spares too
Thanks. A couple of interesting details not on any of the Guardsman’s I have already. Will likely reinstate the older valve as it just seems more fitting for the period. Hopefully everything else is just a tidy up.
It’s a Tilley X246 from 1954 to late 1956 (when Tilley stated to date stamp these). See below: The whole thread is here: First renovation. Cheers Tony
Looks like a fine addition to your collection. After a polish she will look amazing, plus all the spares as you said bonus congratulations mate. Very well explained @Tony Press.
