Yep that perennial issue of painting or treating damaged hoods/ventilators. Having just bought a can of paint rated to 600 deg C I am living in hope or la la land. However, just wondering if anyone has ever tried gun bluing as an option. I also had an old timer tell me that heating steel to a dull red heat and dumping it in sump oil gives it some kind of protection. Anyone ever tried that. I don't usually have used sump oil any more as the dealer servicing the car keeps it. I also wonder whether it was older types of oil that may have worked rather than modern synthetic oils. Just pondering all of this.
@Sedgman I often “blue” steel parts, especially steel nuts, screws, bolts, etc: Heat them evenly until red, drop them into mineral oil. Repeat. Sump oil was once mineral oil. But I have been told that synthetic oils do not “blue” adequately, so I went and found a small drum of mineral oil. Tony
Hiya, I did a test a while back to see how hot the parts of a lantern got, and this was the result. Hope it's of use.
Gooday, Thanks for the ideas. No question that some sort of enamelling would be best so thanks @presscall for that info. The temp you found @Sammi Jane means maybe the paint might work so I’ll try it out for a couple of the more mundane condition hoods/ventilators on the lesser condition lanterns.
Iain, like Tony I have used mineral oil to blue metal parts. I believe old sump oil was preferred because it has a higher carbon content, giving a better and more durable finish.
I have had success using boiled linseed oil to blacken steel and help it being rust resistant. Not heated to anything like red heat, maybe 250C cor a bit more. I wonder if you heated a hood to red heat if it would not warp and possibly self destruct? Don’t know how the”treatment “ with linseed would last on a working hood
Hello Lain The old hood drama we all have, no paint of any kind will last. I have a black Handi hood here that HandiAlbert sent some to Melbourne and had them redone. It looks as good as new, I just wiped the dust off it, I will post some pics of it. Cheers Mark.
