Hi Folks Here is my example of the 156 dated April 1947 as can be seen in photograph number 4. This lamp has at some time been converted for use with paraffin/kerosene. The glass is an original 355 but has at some time cracked. Regards Jeremy
That’s a good example of that style of Coleman table lamp. They produce with a very nice light when fitted with a shade. Cheers Tony
@JEFF JOHNSON Many thanks. @BigStevie She lights easily. @Tony Press Any idea what shades other than Coleman genuine may fit it? Just checked the price on eBay from the States and had to call the paramedics! Regards Jeremy
@X246A I hope you’ve recovered. Sorry for doing that to you. Keep your eyes open in your district. There must be some floating around the antique and collectible stores in the UK. Cheers Tony
Here are a couple of Coleman shades that were fitted. There's also a sailing ship motif in this series available for these pleated style shades. Coleman also brought out plain coloured versions of the pleated shades later on. Both styles have a pleated cellophane covering for ease of cleaning. It is often torn or completely missing. This is the fitting arrangement for them. The finial is inserted through the shade middle fitting and bolted from below. It then slips over the middle post on the burner that also fastens down the globe holder. There's also a series of earlier shades on flat material. This is the early sailing ship graphic, fitted with a mica chimney on a 169K lamp. And you are right X246A, the original parchments are pricey! The original shades are 8-9" dia. at the top, 13"ish dia. at the bottom, and about 8-9" tall, so any aftermarket shade in that range keeps the right look going on them. Mike.
@MikeO Hi Mike Great information thanks. I’ll keep on the lookout for something suitable. Regards Jeremy
I wonder how many of these shades made it to Australia? Coleman did market the DuoLite (242 lantern with parchment shade combo) in Australia so I would hope a few made the trip. Being in Canada where Coleman table lamp production went on until 1971, I've been fortunate to have found 11 parchment shades over the years. Yes, it's that unusual that I've kept track in my logbook! A couple of those were in very tatty condition with the parchment/paper barely hanging on the wire frames. Obviously, they don't hold up well to moisture, and in all honesty, the pleated ones are pretty garish, so I'll bet many were binned when it was time to redecorate. Sigh... Mike.
X246A Great 156 lamps. I was just looking at your You tube. Lots of Tilly lanterns & lamps. MikeO This shade is also great. It's my favorite Canadian lamp. This is my 168K lamp. The parchment shade is "IKEA" electric lamp shade. Thank you, Junichi
@Junichi Kitano That shade looks very nice. It goes well with the 168k. I like it I’ll have to go searching IKEA and other similar places. Thank you for sharing. Cheers Pete
@MikeO Coleman Quick-Lite Co. (Australia) did sell various lamp shades here. Late 1930s: https://classicpressurelamps.com/threads/1939-australian-catalogue.13925/ 1950s: https://classicpressurelamps.com/threads/coleman-thomas-australia-catalogue-1950s.12630/ Cheers Tony
