Got this Vapalux mailed to me and I was looking for information about what model this is and find some similar lanterns but no an exact match. Only stampings are “VAPALUX “ WILLIS BATES MADE IN HALIFAX ENGLAND and control knob looks to short to me and hard to reach for turning also there is a VAPALUX stamping with counterclockwise arrow in the knob, no stamping on the bottom of the fount/tank. Glass/globe seems like it doesn’t belong there to me, more like a Frankenstein. What do you guys think about this? Regards Francisco
M1, nice running lantern . Your glass is wrong, easily corrected by one from Base Camp, a knob too . A seal kit and with any luck the vaporiser is okay and it will be running . You can find the correct shade for them from Julian's.
As others have said, Vapalux M1 with (post 1980) hood, glass and pricker control off an m320. The interesting thing is that you appear to have a tank with the large 1 1/4" filler cap rather than the usual 1" size- the very first M1's are supposed to have the larger filler but i don't think most people have ever seen one. There should be a stamping on the side of the collar that looks like; 21C 129-6558 \|/ XXXX where "XXXX" is the year of manufacture (these are military ID markings)
@steerpike451 no other stampings on the collar than the ones mentioned on my first post. Thanks for the info on control cock and probably I’ll be in the search for the right one. @JEFF JOHNSON Thanks, I’m probably going to save it for future lantern project. @Carlsson Thank you, had no idea where to start. @Hanzo Thank you, I will look to that site an order the right one. I haven’t lit this one yet but previous owner told me that was running.
Been thinking about why there are no MOD stampings on your lantern, and remembered that W&B also made lanterns under contract for the Israel Defence Forces, like this one: 1970s Vapalux M1 Military Version Same collar with just the "Vapalux Halifax" stamp. Now we just have the mystery of how a 1967ish IDF lantern made its way to you in California...
Have no idea either. Still doing some research but this was shipped to me all the way from North Carolina. I’ll ask seller for more info in this
