Tilley FL6 Floor Stand

This is a bog standard floor stand for a Tilley FL6, except for the fact that it is stamped with an ID number of some sort. I received this stand along with my SL1.

This is identical to the stand I have with my FL5. I wonder if the same stand was used for both models although I know the later FL6 versions were tubular. By the way, your SL1 is superb.

 

I do see a difference in the way the mounting sleeve opening is made.

 

Now you mention it there is a difference. The FL5 stand is counterbored at the fork to allow the pinned brass collar on the wingbolts to locate.

 

The stamping on the small FL6 stands are interesting. Mine is similar to the stamping Tony has shown above.

That is very interesting. What do you make the stamping out to read? And, does your stand have the recessed hole for the wing nut?

Hum... They went to a fair bit of trouble to make that detail... Probably brazed as well as riveted then bored out.

You could be sure that when you lifted it that the stand wasn't going to fall off

My stand has no recessed parts and the ends with the holes are just a steep angle welded or brazed very smoothly together. The lettering is confirmed as K H L 7 97

Thought I'd add a photo of my FL6 small stand, seeing mine has holes and not a slot. Thus why, when I was building a tripod, I assumed they had holes.

Is that the same stand as the one with the number stamped on it? Also, can you remember where, and with what attached, did you get that stamped floor stand.

Yes, same one. From a shop in Melb. The FL6 is the smaller pump 1936-37.

 

Given the weight of these lamps I reckon aligning the holes with the mating holes on the lamp must be fun

Sort of. The small stand, is not too bad as you can stand over it and the ones with trunnion (slots) are easier. The one with holes is a tad awkward but OK. The tall tripod stands are OK with slots but the lanterns have a tendency to lean and you can get them slightly off if not careful. I had made a tall tripod and had just holes and that was a nightmare until I cut slots for it.
